A Wedding in Lake Como: Elena & Marcus’s Bespoke Silk Mikado Ceremony
An intimate villa celebration where minimalist clean lines met neoclassical lakeside architecture and twilight candlelight.

From the initial cotton toile fitting in Virginia to stepping onto a wooden Riva boat on Lake Como, Elena shares the intimate story of creating her architectural bespoke gown.
“When Marcus took my hand at the altar, he whispered that the dress looked like it had grown out of the marble balustrade. That was the magic of ZAR.”
— Elena Rossi-Vance, Lake Como Bride
Setting the Scene: Villa Balbiano at Golden Hour
Planning a wedding across nine time zones in Northern Italy requires a deep surrender to mood and environment. Marcus and I knew we wanted a ceremony stripped of theatrical clutter—just 45 of our closest family members, cypress trees standing like sentinels, and the quiet lap of Lake Como against weathered limestone stairs.
When I first walked into ZAR Bridal in Virginia, I brought a dozen photographs of 1960s Balenciaga couture and neoclassical sculpture. I did not want sparkles or tiered flounces; I wanted architectural purity that would hold its own against centuries-old frescoes.
Finding Sculptural Restraint in The Solene Silhouette
The master tailor pulled a bolt of heavyweight ivory silk Mikado. It had this cool, liquid weight and an almost pearlescent matte luster that caught the atelier lights without any glitter.
Together, we designed an asymmetric neckline that folded gently over the left clavicle and carved downward into a sculpted back with hand-covered silk buttons cascading past the waistline. The internal corset was so impeccably calibrated that throughout our six-course dinner on the gravel terrace, I never once had to tug at the bodice.
The Secret Details: Stitched in Quiet Grace
One of my most cherished memories of the atelier was our final hand-off fitting. Tucked inside the interior lining right over my heart, the atelier team had embroidered our initials and wedding date in pale cornflower-blue silk thread.
No guest saw it, but every time I pressed my hand against my waist during the vows, I felt that tiny raised embroidery. It was a private talisman of love and extraordinary human craftsmanship.
